Status of Name
The taxonomic or nomenclatural status (or both) of this entity is in some way unresolved and requires further investigation.

Basionym
Millepora fasciculata Lamarck

Type Information
Type locality: Unknown, probably Mediterranean; (Woelkerling 1998: 268) Neolectotype: PC; the smaller of two plants (Basso, Rodondi & Mari 2004: 222) Notes: According to Basso et al. (2004: 222), the original collection of Millepora fasciculata in PC is heterogeneous, and therefore a previous lectotypification proposed by Woelkerling (in Woelkerling & Lamy, 1998: 268) must be superseded. The smaller of the two plants, which belongs to an undescribed species of Clathromorphum, is selected as the new lectotype. The larger plant in the collection belongs to a species of Lithothamnion. The new lectotype has been illustrated by Woelkerling (in Woelkerling & Lamy 1998: 267, fig. 113 A, specimen on right; fig. 114 A) and its anatomy is also shown in Basso et al. 2004: Figs 13-17.

Taxonomic note
According to Basso et al. (2004: 222), Millepora fasciculata Lamarck has been used as the basionym of Lithophyllum fasciculatum but the latter does not agree with either of the two specimens in the type collection. They also note that the protologue of M. fasciculata includes the description of one more collection not found in PC (Woelkerling in Woelkerling & Lamy 1998: 268). Athanasiadis & Ballantine (2024: 34) note "Woelkerling and Lamy (1998: 266, figs. 113-115) showed that Lamarck's Millepora fasciculata included material representative of a species of Lithothamnion, and subsequently Basso et al. (2004) found the same material to be heterogeneous and selected as lectotype a specimen that belongs to the genus Clathromorphum (see Athanasiadis 2016b: 265)." - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
