Syntype localities: ad littora Faroensis, ut inter Thorhavn et Hoyviig [Faeroe Islands]; (Lyngbye 1819: 119) Lectotype: Lyngbye; 27 vi 1817; C; (Maggs & Hommersand 1993: 69) Notes: Cited in Maggs & Hommersand (1993) as J. Rueness, pers. comm. Hoyviig is the lectotype locality.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), with secund branching (Lewis & Short 1890).
General Environment
This is a marine species.
Habitat
Epiphytic on larger red algae, such as Gracilaria spp. and Polysiphonia elongata, less often on smaller perennial species, and on Laminaria hyperborea fronds, common in submerged positions on artificial materials such as marina pontoons and mooring buoys, occasional to frequent in deep sandy lower-shore pools, large populations occurring from 1 m to at least 11 m depth in sandy areas, such as Zostera marina beds, at wave-sheltered to moderately wave-exposed sites, exposed to currents at the sheltered sites (Maggs & Hommersand 1993: 71).
