Nomenclatural note
Santiago Fragra (pers. comm.) writes: "After the description of Gonyaulax tamarensis by Lebour in 1925 from samples from Plymouth, Tryge Braarud described Gonyaulax tamarensis var. excavata from samples taken in Oslofjord. In 1971, Enrique Balech raised the variety to species level as Gonyaulax excavata based on samples from Argentina. In 1985 Balech and Tangen transferred this species to genus Alexandrium based on material from Oslofjord giving data on PSP toxicity. All the taxonomic work related to this species was based on samples from areas is which only Alexandrium catenella (Group I) was reported, Oslofjord and Argentina, and were related to PSP toxicity. For this reason, all these names should be considered synonyms of Alexandrium catenella instead of Alexandrium tamarense." - (17 July 2022) - M.D. Guiry
