Nomenclatural note
Hamel (1930), in his original description of this species, mentions plants from the south coast of England, but no other records are known. The species can be common in the subtidal of NE Spain and Portugal. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
Taxonomic note
"When I've dived in North Spain, its relatively easy to spot B. clavata. It is highly iridescent in the field and seems slightly broader, more substantial than B. asparagoides." (Francis Bunker, 7 July 2020). B. asparagoides is also monoecious whilst B. clavata is dioecious. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
Distributional note
Dixon & Irvine (1977: 159) note that two specimens from the south coast of England were included by Hamel in his original description, but it has not been recently reported from Britian and Ireland (M.D. Guiry, 16 September 2002). - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
