Nomenclatural notes
'Within this species, Schiffner (1931: 166) described from Bay of Kotor (Montenegro) the following variety: Co. thuioides "thuyoides" var. subtilis Schiffner. Such an infraspecific taxon differs from the autonym in showing "a slenderer thallus, much more loosely ramified and in cells of branches longer"' (Cormaci & al. 2023: 370). - (23 November 2023) - M.D. Guiry
See Athanasiadis (2016: 839, footnote 9) regarding the orthography of this name. Four nomenclatural experts unanimously agree that the original spelling of the specific epithet in the validly published name Conferva thuioides J.E.Smith (1810, pl. 2205) is to be retained and that spelling is not correctable under any provision of ICN Art. 60 or 61. Nägeli (1862: 344) is sometimes credited with this combination, but this combination is not valid there as Nägeli (1862) treated Compsothamnion as a subgenus of Callithamnion (see Dixon, 1960: 299); Schmitz (1889: 450) was the first author who combined Conferva thuioides under the genus Compsothamnion as C. thuioides (J.E. Smith) Schmitz (G. Furnari, pers. comm.). - (27 February 2017) - M.D. Guiry
