Taxonomic notes
"Within H. wurdemannii (= H. crispella), Falkenberg (1901: 638) noted the occurrence of a robust, very squarrose form with 4-6 pericentral cells living to -30 m and a slenderer form, less squarrose and with 4 pericentral cells living in deeper waters (up to -90 m); however, pending further studies, he didn%u2019t propose any new taxon and also put forward the hypothesis that the two forms could be represent two distinct species." (Cormaci & al. 2023: 507, 509). - (07 December 2023) - M.D. Guiry
Lipkin & Silva (2002: 32) record H. cispella from Southern Red Sea. They note that their plants were referable to H. crispella var. laxa, which appears to be merely a shaded-habitat ecophene. - (09 June 2010) - G.M. Guiry
Habitat note
Widespread in most warm seas Southern Red Sea: in shaded cavelet in coral rock. ca. 50 cm depth, on Chondrophycus parvipapillatus (Lipkin & Silva 2002). Northern Red Sea: common on coral reefs, as well as in the epiphytic algal community on seagrass leaves (Lipkin, pers. obs. in Lipkin & Silva 2002). - (09 June 2010) - G.M. Guiry
