Meneghini; isotypes in LD, PC (Lipkin & Silva 2002). Womersley (1987: 160) gives the following data: Type from Gulf of Spezia, N. Italy; in FI (?).

Taxonomic note
According to Silva et al. (1996) the name Sphacelaria cervicornis has been misapplied to this species by Montagne (1845: 38). John et al. (2004) cite Sphacelaria hancockii E.Y. Dawson as a synonym of this species. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry

Habitat note
Widespread in warm and temperate seas. On drifting Turbinaria; on rocks; among other epiphytes on Turbinaria triquetra; on Padina boergesenii (Lipkin & Silva 2002). A common species on rock at or just below low tide level (Womersley 1987). - (15 June 2010) - G.M. Guiry
