The type species (lectotype) of the genus Hystrichosphaera is Hystrichosphaera furcata (Ehrenberg) Wetzel ex Wetzel.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gonyaulax spinifera (Claparède & Lachmann) Diesing.
