The type species (lectotype) of the genus Hystrichosphaera is Hystrichosphaera furcata (Ehrenberg) Wetzel ex Wetzel.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Spiniferites membranaceus (M.Rossignol) Sarjeant.
