The type species (holotype) of the genus Desmia is Desmia ligulata Lyngbye.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Portieria hornemannii (Lyngbye) P.C.Silva.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), cushion-shaped, strongly convexed (Stearn 1983).
