The type species (holotype) of the genus Spongocladia is Spongocladia vaucheriiformis J.E.Areschoug.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Cladophoropsis vaucheriiformis (Areschoug) Papenfuss.

Type Information
Lectotype locality: Sorong, W Irian Jaya, Indonesia; (Leliaert & Coppejans 2006: 668) Lectotype: O. Beccari; May 1872; BM; (Leliaert & Coppejans 2006: 668) Notes: According to Leliaert & Coppejans (2006: 668), no type locality was indicated in the original prologue ('ubi praecedens'). The single specimen (marked as type in BM) and labelled in Beccari's hand 'Nova-Guinea, Sorong (non Ins. Aru) v. 1872' is indicated as lectotype by them. They note that the Beccari collections are normally housed in FI, but the type of S. dichotomum was sent to Murray & Boodle (BM) by Beccari (Murray & Boodle 1888: 169) and apparently never sent back (Sartoni & Nepi, pers. comm.).

Adjective (Latin), dichotomous, having divisions always in pairs (Stearn 1983).
