Description: Cell with a haptonema and covered by hatshaped siliceous scales. The central area of scales bulging, having many pores. The brim of scales recurved, not perforated.

Taxonomic status: This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Prymnesium.
Comments: Name refers to the materialof the scales (Gr. hyalinus = glass, lithos = stone).
