The type species (lectotype) of the genus Halymenia is Halymenia floresii (Clemente) C.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Rhodophyllis reptans (Suhr) Papenfuss.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), creeping, prostrate and rooting; arching and then rooting (Stearn 1983).
