Nomenclatural note
The protologue for the basionym includes "D. Francisco Flores hanc speciem dicare volui, fucorum Luciferifani indagatori diligentissimo acutissimoque." Thus the species is named to honour this person and the epithet should accordingly be "floresii" not "floresia" as commonly in the literature (Guiry, Schneider and Wynne, e-mail communications May 2002). - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
Taxonomic note
Using COI-5P barcoding, Schneider et al. (2010) found that Bermuda specimens previously attributable to Halymenia floresii were part of a morphologically variable species with a type locality in the islands, H. pseudofloresii Collins et M. Howe. Because narrow specimens from Bermuda were morphologically identical to European specimens of its sister taxon, the generitype H. floresii, yet distinct molecularly, Schneider et al. (2010) questioned all collections of the latter species from the western Atlantic until they are confirmed by molecular comparisons with eastern Atlantic isolates. - (18 May 2010) - M.D. Guiry
Distributional note
Brazil ? (Azevedo et al., 2016). - (12 August 2016) - G.M. Guiry
