Type locality: "Ad insulam S. Crucis" [St Croix, Virgin Islands]; (Agardh 1824: 120) Lectotype: unknown; LD; Herb. alg. Agardh7287 (Leliaert & Coppejans 2006: 664) Notes: Leliaert & Coppejans (2006: 664) note that St. Croix is indicated as type locality in the original prologue. Several specimens of this species from that locality are present in LD; one of these, labeled 'Conf. membranacea Hofm, Ins St. Crucis' from the Agardh herbarium, is indicated as lectotype.

Adjective (Latin), membranous (Stearn 1983).

Habitat note
Widespread in warm seas. On rocks in the intertidal zone: in upper midlittoral, filled small pits in the lower part of the concave, eroded, fossil reef wall, shaded by the overhanging ledge, and in the upper part of rock flat; in deeper habitats, usually grew epiphytically, forming sparse growths on hosts (Lipkin & Silva 2002). Grows epilithically as cushions or mat-forming thalli, or loose-lying as Aegagropila-like clumps, in exposed or sheltered intertidal to shallow subtidal habitats (occasionally to 10 m depth) Leliaert & Coppejans (2006). - (17 June 2010) - G.M.
