The type species (holotype) of the genus Phycopteris is Phycopteris interrupta (Lamouroux) Kützing.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Zonaria harveyana (Pappe ex Kützing) Areschoug.

Named for William Henry Harvey (1811-1866), Irish Botanist, collector and traveller.
