The type species (lectotype) of the genus Scytonema is Scytonema hoffmannii C.Agardh ex Bornet & Flahault.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Bostrychia intricata (Bory) Montagne.

Lectotype locality: Falkland Islands; (Silva & al. 1996: 552) Lectotype : PC; (Womersley 2003: 369) Notes: This type locality was first recorded by Post (1936: 36, 40). Collector: Durville and Lesson (INA).

Adjective (Latin), entangled (Stearn 1983).
