Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Halymenia is Halymenia floresii (Clemente) C.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Nothogenia fastigiata (Bory) P.G.Parkinson.

Type locality: Îles Malouines [Falkland Islands]; (Dumont d'Urville 1825: 22) Holotype: PC; ? (Huisman & Womersley 2006: 91) Notes: Huisman & Womersley (2006: 91) note that the holotype is presumably in PC, but cannot presently be located (B. de Reviers, pers. comm., 9 May 2006). Fragments in LD (Herb. Agardh 32591)
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), fastigiate, with branches clustered, parallel and erect, giving a narrow elongated habit (occasionally meaning branched reaching to the same height) (Stearn 1983).
