Taxonomic notes
John et al. (2004) cite Chrysymenia dichotoma J. Agardh and Halymenia dichotoma (J. Agardh) J. Agardh as synonyms of this species. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
Sebdenia dichotoma (J. Agardh) Berthold 1884 is an illegitimate combination erroneously attributed to Berthold by Codomier (1973), but attributed to the latter author by Parkinson (Halymenia, ... 1980: 15). However, it is a later homonym of S. dichotoma Berthold 1884. The following nomenclatural discussion is kindly contributed by Professor Paul C. Silva on the subject: "The name Sebdenia has a long history. It first appeared in the list of species appended to Harvey's exsiccata "Ceylon Algae" (1857), The species was accepted as Sarcodia ? platycarpa Harvey n.sp., but with the note that it might be assigned to a new genus, for which Harvey proposed the name Sebdenia. These names are all nomina nuda because Harvey did not provide descriptions. The specific name Sarcodia platycarpa was validated by Grunow (Algen der Fidschi-, Tonga- und Samoa-Inseln gesammelt von Dr. E. Graeffe, p. 42-43. 1873/1874}, who provided a description taking into account Harvey's specimen and a Graeffe collection from Tongatabu. Grunow discussed the possibility of recognizing Sebdenia as a distinct genus, but did not accept the idea. J. Agardh (Sp. Alg. 3(1): 134. 1876) validly published Sebdenia as an unranked infrageneric taxon (presumably subgenus or section) of Halymenia. The three included species were Halymenia platycarpa (Harvey ex Grunow) J. Agardh, H. kallymenioides Harvey, and H. monardiana Montagne. Berthold (Mitt. Zool. Stat. Neapel 3: 530. 1882) elevated J. Agardh's unranked taxon to generic status, as Sebdenia (J. Agardh) Berthold, with two species: S. monardiana (Montagne) Berthold and S. dichotoma Berthold (nomen nudum). Berthold validated his Sebdenia dichotoma in his monograph of the Cryptonemiaceae of the Gulf of Naples (p. 21, pl. 2.1884). Schmitz (Flora 72: 444. 1889) designated S. monardiana as the type of the generic name. Codomier (Phycologia 12: 97. 1973) confused the nomenclature after determining that Chrysymenia dichotoma J. Agardh (Sp. Alg. 2(1): 211. 1851) was conspecific with Sebdenia dichotoma Berthold by writing (incorrectly) Sebdenia dichotoma (J. Agardh) Berthold. Nomenclaturally, the Agardh and Berthold names are independent. In effect, Codomier made the combination Sebdenia dichotoma (J. Agardh) Codomier, which is a later homonym of Sebdenia dichotoma Berthold." - (16 June 2006)
