Taxonomic note
"To date, this species was recorded from the Mediterranean Sea only with its synonym Apoglossum gregarium: first by Sartoni & Boddi (1993: 297) from the Tuscan Archipelago (Italy) and later from some other localities (see M.D. Guiry in Guiry & Guiry, 2023). The species was commonly, but erroneously, credited to (E.Y. Dawson) Wynne. In fact, when Wynne (1985: 169) demonstrated the conspecificity between- Membranoptera spatulata and Hypoglossum gregarium, he thought that the transfer of Membranoptera spatulata to the genus Apoglossum should have created a name so confusable with Apoglossum spathulatum (Sonder) Womersley et Shepley that it could be considered as its homonym. Therefore, he intended to propose A. gregarium (E.Y. Dawson) Wynne as a new combination having as basionym H. gregarium and not Membranoptera spatulata (the name with nomenclatural priority). However, his intended new combination should be instead considered as a nomen novum having Membranoptera spatulata as replaced synonym and Hypoglossum gregarium as heterotypic synonym. As such, according to Art. 49.1 Note 1 and Ex. 9 of ICN (Turland et al., 2018) it has be credited only to Wynne as A. gregarium Wynne. According to Tsiamis & Bellou (2010), this species (as Apoglossum gregarium), can be recognized from the following vegetative: i. minute and delicate blade, generally unbranched; ii. conspicuous midrib, which is sharply differentiated from the rest of blade cells, iii. cortication of the midrib present only near the base and in the stipe; iv. most pericentral cells remaining transversely undivided; v. indistinct lateral veins; vi. veins usually not reaching the margin due to frequent intercalary divisions in secondary and higher cell rows; vii. angular, sigmoid to irregular shape of cells in higher cell rows." (Cormaci & al. 2023: 556).
