Taxonomic note
Huisman (2018: 580) notes "Falkenberg (1901: 430%u2013431) placed V. melvillii in synonymy with V. fimbriata (J.V.Lamour.) J.Agardh (type locality: Northern Australia). However, Norris (op. cit. 23) regarded them as distinct and listed the features he felt separated the two (both as Osmundaria). These included broader axes (to 5 mm in V. melvillii, 1%u20132 mm in V. fimbriata) and the reproductive structures restricted to the margins in V. fimbriata. The N.W.A. specimens fall within Norris%u2019 concept of V. melvillii." - (10 October 2018) - M.D. Guiry
