The type species (holotype) of the genus Helminthocladia is Helminthocladia purpurea (Harvey) J.Agardh.

Adjective (Latin), south, southern (Stearn 1983).
General Environment
This is a marine species.
Habitat
A common species in areas of moderate to slight wave action, though patchy in its occurrence; in southern Australia occurs during the summer but on subtropical W. Australian coasts recorded during winter (Womersley 1994: 91).
