Type locality: Whidbey Island, Washington, USA; (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 470) Holotype: N.L. Gardner Algae of Puget Sound No. 653 destributed by Setchell & N.L. Gardner; vii.1901; "on rocks, upper sublittoral zone" [but marked "upper littoral zone" on box]; TRH; C18-3347 (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 470) Notes: "An isotype in UC (UC, 745685) was mistakenly termed the lectotype by Steneck & Paine (1986: 231)." Woelkering et al. (2005: 470). Isotypes: UC 745685 and UC 766630 (Gabrielson et al., 2023).
