Distributional note
"According to Corillion (1957) and Korsch (2018), Sphaerochara prolifera is known from Asia, Europe, and both North and South America. Sphaerochara prolifera has been recorded from many countries in Europe, but there are no records from most countries in Northern Europe." (van de Weyer 2024). - (22 January 2025) - M.D. Guiry
Conservational note
"Sphaerochara prolifera is a pioneer species of open habitats in ditches and pools. For the germination of this annual species it is important that there is little or no competition with other water plants. In deeper lakes the populations of this species seem to be more stable especially in the deeper parts where there is an incomplete cover of vegetation. Sphaerochara prolifera is listed in many different Red Lists/Red Data Books: the Balkans (EN), Czech Republic (VS), Germany (EN), Poland (CR), Ukraine (VU), Lithuania (EN), Netherlands (VU), Iberia (CR), Ireland (EN) and Britain (VU). It is Extinct in Upper Austria. It also disappeared in Belgium. (van de Weyer 2024). - (22 January 2025) - M.D. Guiry
