Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Melobesia is Melobesia membranacea (Esper) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Titanoderma canescens (Foslie) Woelkerling, Y.M.Chamberlain & P.C.Silva.

Type locality: Marine Laboratory, Prov. of Sagami, Pacific coast of middle Japan; (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 143) Holotype: K.Yendo; 1899; "paa [= on] Padina arborescens"; TRH; A17-1023 (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 143)

Origin of Species Name
Participle (Latin), becoming white; applied to plants covered with greyish-white pubescence.
