Type locality: [West coast of France]; (Esper 1796: pl. ) Lectotype (designated by Woelkerling & Chamberlain 2007: 232; Esper, 1796, Corallina Tab. XII, figs 2, 3, and 4: Upper right specimen on unnumberd sheet labelled Melobesia membranacea by Lamouroux (epitype) CN; sine numero (Woelkerling & Chamberlain 2007: 233) Notes: Woelkerling & Chamberlain (2007) note that the "neotype" of Chamberlain (1985) has to be superseded as the ICN rules governing the selection of types have changed. It should be regarded as an epitype (CN, unnumbered, herbarium Lamouroux), on the red alga Calliblepharis ciliata, designated and illustrated in Chamberlain (1985: 676–677, as "neotype"); see Athanasiadis (2024: 191).

Adjective (Latin), membranous (Stearn 1983).

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Habitat
Occurs epiphytically on a variety of green, brown and red algae in southern Australia and has been found intertidally on rocky reefs and in tide pools and subtidally to depths of 42 m (Womersley 1996: 171).
