Nomenclatural note
The name Ralfsia fluviatilis Areschoug is not the basionym of Heribaudiella fluviatilis: it is an invalid name, never having been used in print by Areschoug. The basionym is Lithoderma fluviatile Areschoug. Apparently, Areschoug mentioned the name "Ralfsia fluviatilis" in a lecture ("Vorlesungen") in 1871. The name was first published as Lithotderma fluviatile by Areschoug in 1875 in Nova Acta Regiae Societatis Scientiarum Upsaliensis, Series 3 10(1): 24 without a figure Furthermore, the combination Heribaudiella fluviatilis was proposed twice by Svedelius in 1930, in Zeitschrift für Botanik, 23: 195, and in Svensk Botanisk Tidskrift 24(2): 330. It is likely that the former predated the latter by a few days (see card in INA). Many of the binomials mentioned by Svedelius (Zeitschrift für Botanik 23: 915, 1930) are "sensus" and the name Lithoderma fluviatile can only be ascribed to Areschoug. - (12 February 2011) - M.D. Guiry
