Nomenclatural note
While Harvey (1833: 370) cites Conferva majuscula Dillwyn (1809) in synonymy, Gomont attributes the name to Harvey (1833); Gomont says in relation to Conferva majuscula Dillwyn "synon. dub."! and goes on to say "Faute d'échantillons authentiques, nous ne pouvons faire remonter avec certitude au delà de Harvey le nom de Lyngbya majuscula." and adds further comments about Dillwyn's materials. - (29 July 2014) - M.D. Guiry
Habitat note
Widespread in warm and temperate waters; on Halimeda discoidea (Lipkin & Silva 2002). - (28 May 2010) - G.M. Guiry
Usage note
Whitton (2011: 91) makes a strong statement about this species: "WARNING! Material of this species from other countries has been shown to contain several biologically highly active molecules and should be treated as a possible carcinogenic risk: minimise contact with the skin." Saxitoxin-producing species (Mohamed & Al-Shehri 2015). Harmful species (Lassus et al. 2017). - (02 May 2014) - M.D. Guiry
