Taxonomic note
Tsiamis et al. (2013) remark "Although numerous records of this species do exist for the Mediterranean Sea, including Greece (see Athanasiadis, 1987), we agree with Gallardo et al. (1993) that these records might refer to Codium effusum, a rather common alga of the Greek coasts. These two species share similar external morphology and their distinction requires detailed examination. Thus, the Greek records of C. adhaerens, which all lack sufficient documentation, should be treated as debatable, pending new documented records." - (11 May 2015) - M.D. Guiry
Distributional note
The status of this species in the Mediterranean and elsewhere outside the north-eastern Atlatnic needs reassessment. The records for the Mediterranean should be probably be referred to Codium effusum (Gallardo et al., 1993). John et al. (2004) note that this species is recorded for “western Africa” by Schmidt (1931). - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
