This is a freshwater species.
Habitat
Normaly freshwater, but occationally in slightly brackish water.

"C[hara] contraria is an extratropical cosmopolite, mainly occurring in the northern hemisphere but also in South America (Blindow et al., 2018), South-Africa and Australia (Korsch, 2018). It is common throughout Europe and occurs in America (Langangen, 2002), Asia (Dixit, 1935; Faridi, 1955; Hussain et al., 2003; Naz et al., 2011; Pal et al., 1962) and Australia (Naz et al., 2011).
