Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Tolypella is Tolypella nidifica (O.F.Müller) A.Braun.

Adjective (Latin), clustered in a round mass.
General Environment
This is a freshwater species.
Description
The plants are up to 20 cm high, usually encrusted and grey in colour. The axis is up to 1 mm in diameter. The sterile branchlets are simple, are 3- 5 celled, have 3- 4 rays and 3- 5 celled end-segment which is much longer than the rays. The end-cells are rounded. Some whorls are forming dense heads. The species is monoecious. The oogonia are 1-3 together, stalked and up to 600 µm long. The oospore is less than 400 µm long, brown to dark brown in colour. The antheridium is up to 400 µm in diameter.
Habitat
Tolypella glomerata is found in shallow alkaline waters, in ditches, ponds, lakes and temporary pools. All the finds in the area are near the coast.
T. glomerata is according to Olsen (1944) both winter-annual and summer-annual. The winter-annual germinates in autumn and has ripe oospores in May – June, and the summer-annual germinates in spring has ripe oospores in August –September.
Like Tolypella intricata the species is “meteoric”, it colonizes an area and then disappears after a short time
