Stegenga & Mol (1983: 92) and Womersley (1987: 77) cite this species as Elachista scutulata (Smith) Areschoug - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
According to Lee (2000: 9), the genus Elachista Duby has been formally conserved under the Botanical Rules (see Farr et al. 1979). He notes that the correct name of the type species is E. scutulata (Smith) Areschoug rather than E. scutellata (Smith) Duby (1830: 972), nom. illeg. - (14 August 2009) - G.M. Guiry

Taxonomic note
"Besides the species treated in the key, from the Mediterranean area was also reported, but only from the Black Sea (Ribera et al., 1992), Elachista scutulata (J.E. Smith) Areschoug (see Tab. 39, Figs 3-6). This species distinguishes from other Mediterranean species of Elachista with paraphyses, in showing unilocular cylindrical cysts borne on 2-4 celled stalks (pyriform and borne on unicellular stalks, in other species)."
