Type locality: "King George's Sound, February, rare, February (88)" [King George Sound, Western Australia]; (Harvey 1855: 537) Lectotype (designated by Yoshida 1988: 981): TCD; Herb. Harvey, Aust. Alg. Exsicc. 111B (Yoshida 1998: 981) Notes: Travelling Set No. 88 missing in 1952 (Womersley 2003: 97). Lectotype also designated by Millar (1990: 417).
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), south, southern (Stearn 1983).

A deep-water species, usually in shade when in shallow depths (Womersley 2003: 97).
