Taxonomic notes
According to Hughey, Silva & Hommersand (2001), the type of Iridaea heterocarpa P. et R. [Mazzaella heterocarpa (P. et R.) Fred.] represents the tetrasporangial phase of a species of Chondrus, possibly C. crispus Stackh. An ITS 1 sequence of the type of I. heterocarpa from Kamchatka, Russia differed from that of C. crispus Stackh. from England and Connecticut and from C. platynus (C. Ag.) J. Ag. from the Sea of Okhotsk, Russia by 1 bp. - (07 July 2009) - G.M. Guiry
Saunders & Millar (2014: 230) comment: "Hughey et al. (2001)
used tetrasporangial development in combination with molecular
data from the type to sink "true" M. heterocarpa into Chondrus
crispus. As arguably sufficient extraction controls were not employed
in that study (Saunders and McDevit 2012b), and M. macrocarpa tetrasporangial
sori can look superficially Chondrus-like, the possibility remains
that M. heterocarpa is the correct name for this species." - (13 June 2014) - M.D. Guiry
