The type species (holotype) of the genus Codium is Codium tomentosum Stackhouse.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Codium geppiorum O.C.Schmidt.

Taxonomic note
According to Silva et al. (1996: 852) this species is clearly a member of the C. geppiorum complex and further study willl probably show that it does not warrant taxonomic recognition. South & Skelton (2003) cite ?Codium bulbopilum Setchell 1924 as a synonym of Codium geppiorum O. Schmidt 1923. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
