Nomenclatural note
Incorrect citation of basionym "Tolypella intricata Trentepohl ex Roth" cited instead of "Chara intricata Trentepohl ex Roth" in Feist & Grambast-Fessard (1991: 201), but is valid as the place of publication of the basionym and the page number is correctly given (Art. 41.3). - (02 November 2017) - M.D. Guiry

Distributional note
"According to Corillion (1957) and Korsch (2018) Sphaerochara intricata is restricted to Europe, Asia and northern Africa. Sphaerochara intricata has been recorded from many countries in Europe (Fig. 72.6), but there are no records from most countries in northern and eastern Europe." (van de Weyer 2024). - (22 January 2025) - M.D. Guiry

Conservational note
"Sphaerochara intricata is a pioneer in ditches and pools. For the germination of this annual species it is important that there is no or little competition with other water plants. In deeper lakes the populations of Sphaerochara intricata seem to be more stable especially in the deeper parts where the cover of vegetation is not complete. Sphaerochara intricata is listed in different Red Data Books: the Balkans (EN), Bulgaria (CR), Germany (EN), Poland (CR), Sweden (VU), Czech Republic (VS), UK and Ireland (EN). Sphaerochara intricata is extinct in Denmark and Switzerland. Within ditches and pools it is necessary to maintain areas which are not covered with other macrophytes. It can be useful to remove other macrophytes to facilitate the germination of Sphaerochara intricata. In general, all measures to reduce/ prevent eutrophication are recommended. This also includes maintenance of fish communities which are typical for the specific water body type." (van de Weyer 2024). - (22 January 2025) - M.D. Guiry
