Taxonomic notes
Binomial also proposed by Collins in Collins Holden & Setchell 1911, Phyc. Bor.-Amer.: 1798, with Basionym Polysiphonia plumula J. Agardh 1885, but it is invalid: error for Pterosiphonia plumula. (See INA) - (14 July 2022) - Salvador Valenzuela Miranda
"Athanasiadis (1996: 53) included Pt. plumula within the subgen. Pterothamnion sect. Pterothamnion. Members of this section are characterized by the following characters: each axial cell provided with a pair of subequal distichous major whorl branches and a second pair of dimorphic, heteromorphic or subequal whorl branches. The two subequal branches bear series of adaxial branchlets and 1(-2) abaxial branchlets. The last arise the one from the coxal cell of the branch, the other (when present) by the adjacent cell to the coxal one. In the Mediterranean Sea, this infrageneric taxon is represented by Pt. plumula (see above) and Pt. polyacanthum (see below)." (Cormaci & al. 2023: 286). - (16 November 2023) - M.D. Guiry

Distributional note
Following the revision of the delineation of this taxon by Athanasiadis (1996), records of this species from the Adriatic Sea should be considered with caution (Furnari et al., 1999). - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
