General Environment
This is a marine species.
Description
Plant up to 11 cm in height, heavily calcified, dichotomously branched, sometimes with proliferous lateral branches. Axes 1-1.2 mm in diameter, generally with prominent annulations. Medulla with elongate cells 30-40 microns in diameter, mixed with rhizoidal filaments. Assimilatory filaments up to 300 microns long, di- to trichotomously divided, with trichotomies occurring mostly in outer cortex; lower cells elongate, 7-20 microns in diameter, outer cells clavate or obovoid, 5-10 microns in diameter, equal in diameter to or larger than subtending cells. Plants monoecious or dioecious. Spermatangia 2-4, borne on mother cells on outer cortical cells, or on elongate mother cells on subcortical cells. Carpogonial branches three- or four-celled, curved. Fertilized carpogonium dividing transversely, with only the distal cell producing the gonimoblast. Carposporophyte hemispherical, moderately diffuse, up to 300 microns in diameter, with fertile filaments intermingling with sterile filaments, with terminal quadripartite carposporangia. Fusion cell absent.
