Nomenclatural note
"The basionym of this species (Ceramium brevizonatum H.E. Petersen), was described by Petersen (1918: 14, figs. 8-9) from Algeria. Feldmann- Mazoyer (1938: 324) reduced Petersen's species to a variety of C. tenerrimum as C. tenerrimum var. brevizonatum (H.E. Petersen) Feldmann- Mazoyer, indicating as the only difference from the autonym the length of the internodes: 2- 4 times that of the nodes (2-12 times in the autonym). Secilla (2012: 251, figs. 119-121), after having examined the type material of this taxon, proposed the restoration of the rank of species for it to which should be referred, besides the Mediterranean specimens of C. tenerrimum var. brevizonatum, also the Mediterranean records of C. tenerrimum [var. tenerrimum] sensu Mazoyer (1938), sensu Feldmann-Mazoyer (1941) and sensu Coppejans (1983). Differently, according to Secilla (op. cit.: 256) C. tenerrimum (G. Martens) Okamura, on the basis of morphological observations and molecular analyses, would represent a complex of cryptic species whose binomial should be applicable only to the specimens of the western Pacific Ocean. See also the note to the genus Ceramium under the entry C. tenerrimum." (Cormaci & al. 2023: 253). - (15 November 2023) - M.D. Guiry
